Born in Damascus in 1986, Hamid Sulaiman decided to become an architect at first. However, he soon discovered his devotion to painting and drawing.
In 2011, he was arrested for taking part in the Arab Spring demonstrations in Syria. After his release, he continued his journey and settled in France: “France was the country of comics”.
In March 2016, he published his first graphic novel: Freedom Hospital, the story of a clandestine hospital in Syria. An exhibition on this work took place at the Paris Book Fair. He had the honour of being published by the prestigious German publisher Hanser Verlag (Freedom Hospital has been published in five languages, including an English edition by Jonathan Cape). Leading authors such as Joe Sacco and Roberto Saviano have written about his work.
Hamid has won numerous awards including the Pulp Festival Award, Pen Voices Festival Award, and more. Hamid started to make art projects between Paris and Berlin, and has had exhibitions with institutions such as the British Museum, the Arab World Institute, the Museum of Resistance in Esch (Luxembourg).In 2022, Hamid released his new graphic novel “Frans Masereel” with scenarist Julian Voloj, published by Casterman.
Today, Hamid lives and works in Angoulême.
